Statistical Modelling for Biological and Environmental Systems, September 12th-16th

SMBES2011 (Statistical modelling for biological and environmental systems) is a 5 day summer school on the development of statistical methodology motivated by and grounded in contemporary problems in biology and environmental sciences. The SMBES2011 summer school will take place at the Palazzo Pesaro-Papafava, home of Warwick @ Venice, situated in the heart of historic Venice (a short walk from the Rialto Bridge and the Ca’ d’Oro) from Monday September 12th to Friday September 16th. Our invited speakers will provide expository lectures on Statistical inference for nonlinear dynamic models of biological systems (Mark Girolami, UCL, UK) Introduction to continuous-time Markov processes and variational approximations with applications to transcriptional dynamics (Manfred Opper, Berlin, DE) A statistical approach to space-time modeling of environmental variables (Bruno Sanso USSC, USA) Statistical models for the temporal and spatial evolution of stochastic processes (Leonard Held, Zurich, CH) Bayesian inference for stochastic population dynamics (Barbel Finkenstadt Warwick, UK) Semi-parametric multivariate time series modeling with applications to neural dynamics (Fabio Rigat Novartis, Italy) |
SMBES2011 equally would like the contribution (talks or posters) of participants focusing on
Application areas of interest include inference for dynamical systems, biomolecular networks, understanding the statistical relations between genotype and complex phenotypes, modeling of spatio-temporal processes, modeling of the effects of human exposure to environmental agents, climate change, ecology and epidemics, systems biology, inverse problems. SMBES2011 will run in parallel with the Warwick System Biology summer school on gene regulatory networks, fostering the interaction of the Statistics and Systems Biology research communities. |
Schedule
SMBES2011 starts at 10:30 AM on Monday 12th September and finishes at 1400 on Friday 16th September.

Registration:
There is no registration cost for attending the summer school and lunch will be provided each day for all participants.
In addition, a contribution of €15 per day will be given to each participant towards evening meals.
Participants will need to pay for their own travel and arrange their accommodation.
Places are limited to 30. Please apply as soon as possible and we will let you know whether your registration has been accepted as soon as we can after that so you can arrange your accommodation.
Applicants are expected to contribute to the workshop by giving either a 25 min talk (including time for questions) or a poster. The abstract needs to be provided as part of the registration.
Accommodation bursery:
The Department of Statistics is able to fund accommodation at the Istituto Canossiano
for early career researchers.
Please register as soon as possible and not later than 15 June 2011 if you wish to apply for this.
Allocation of these will be by June 15 and selection is based on the quality of the application.
