Group Leader, Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), Amsterdam & Associate Fellow, Department of Statistics, University of Warwick.

We focus on statistical approaches in molecular and systems biology. Our efforts encompass both specific biological questions, addressed in collaboration with experimental groups, and methodological research in statistics and machine learning motivated by such questions.

Systems biology approaches offer the promise of quantitative models that shed light on aspects of basic cancer biology. Equally, there is much potential in machine learning approaches to personalized therapy. However, while the promise of systems approaches in cancer is clear, the challenges posed by noisy and incomplete data, inherent biological variability and complex underlying processes and dynamics remain substantial. Our efforts are aimed at developing and exploiting statistical methods that can help to surmount some of these challenges. Networks, high-dimensional problems, combinatorial influences and inference for dynamical systems are key methodological themes.
