Applied Research

Applied projects are undertaken from time to time when interesting opportunities present themselves. For instance, analysis of modelling of road wear in the form of rutting and deflection data, and which involved a new mathematically-based definition of the onset of settling. Some earlier work was for the EU funded Pavement Analysis and Infrastructure (PARIS) project. Analysing vehicle noise data has been undertaken for the Motor Industries Research Association (MIRA). An EPSRC Teaching Company Scheme at the Campden & Chorley Wood Food Research Association involved supervising a statistician in the analysis of data and the design of experiments in relation to the food and drink industries. My belief is that statisticians should involve themselves as co-investigators of challenging applied projects in which data need to be or have been properly collected.
