| Nov 20th | Workshop: Molecular Motors. Molecular motors are highly evolved enzymes that use chemical energy to generate forces, and hence motion. This energy is often supplied by ATP or GTP but can also come from the chemical potential associated with an ionic concentration gradient. These motors play numerous essential roles in the cell by maintaining the cytoskeleton, controlling intracellular transport, mitosis and cell motility, as well as creating the forces used by all muscle tissue. These motors form an extensive "zoo" of molecules but exhibit recurring architectural and enzymatic features. There are still numerous outstanding scientific questions about their function and structure but increasingly detailed information is being obtained by a variety of techniques, including e.g. crystallography, electron microscopy, real time videomicroscopy, genetic (structural) manipulation and the use of laser tweezers to apply carefully controlled forces in the pico-Newton range. These relatively well controlled biophysical systems also present a compelling challenge for modelers interested in systems with cyclic reaction pathways. We anticipate a highly stimulating and interactive meeting and look forward to talks from some of the leading figures in their respective fields. Organiser: Dr Matthew Turner.
