    W-CAS Teaching and Training

Warwick Chemistry has had a hugely successful Masters programme on 'Instrumental and Analytical Methods in Biological and Environmental Analysis' (IAMBEC) for the past 12 years. More than 100 students have graduated from this course and gone on to careers in industry or to further study at PhD level.

One of Warwick’s distinctive strengths lies in successful interdisciplinary research and teaching http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/wisp/. Our students in analytical science, an inherently interdisciplinary subject, enjoy being taught jointly by academics from the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, and Biological Sciences. Conversely, members of WCAS also contribute significantly to the training of Masters and PhD students in Warwick’s successful Doctoral Training Centres in MOAC, Systems Biology and Complexity.

Warwick also has a good track record in PhD programmes in analytical science, right across the Science faculty and the Medical School. PhD projects span the whole range of analytical science, and many are in collaboration with industry and SMEs, including instrument manufacturers, pharmaceutical and speciality chemicals companies, agri-business, and advanced materials.

EPSRC/RSC Analytical Science students are currently supervised by Prof. Alison Rodger (Chemistry), Profs. Julie Macpherson and Pat Unwin (Chemistry), Dr Mark Newton (Physics) and Prof Jim Scrivens (Biological Sciences) in collaboration with Dr. Claudia Blindauer Course Coordinator (Chemistry).

IAMBEC has now been superceded by AS:MIT (Analytical Science: Methods and Instrumental Techniques). The new Analytical Science course hopes to improve on the successes of the previous course with WCAS and Chemistry working together to recruit MSc students from diverse backgrounds. Training will offer choice from both existing (e.g. Introduction to Statistical Practice, Statistical Methods, Multivariate Statistics, Designed Experiments, Monte Carlo methods, Mass Spectrometry, Elemental Analysis, Scientific Computing, Electroanalytical Chemistry) and new modules (e.g. Advanced linear and non-linear Modelling, Chemometrics, Microscopies in Research).
