RESEARCH PROFILE

Research Interests

The focus of this group is the control of lepidopteran pests by insect viruses, in particular granuloviruses of horticultural pests e.g. codling moth, summer fruit tortrix, diamondback moth. The group has expertise in molecular virology, in vitro propagation of GVs, and genetic manipulation of a GV. Two GVs have been sequenced to date. The group also has bioassay and QA expertise

BACKGROUND

Doreen studied Applied Biology (1964-1968) at the University of Salford and graduated with a B.Sc. (2:1) in Applied Biology. She carried out her post-graduate research degree at the University of Manchester (1968-1971) on the "Uptake of exogenous DNA by mammalian cells" and was awarded a Ph.D. from the Biological Chemistry Department. Her post-doctoral studies were carried out at Brandeis University, Mass., USA on "Receptors for hallucinogenic drugs in rat brains" (1971-73). From 1973 until 1987 she was a lecturer and teacher for West Sussex County Council.

In 1987 she joined HRI at Littlehampton as a Higher Scientific Officer. She was promoted to Senior Scientific Officer and Project Leader in 1989. In 1999 she was promoted to Principal Investigator, Insect Virology Group Leader and was the Research Area Strategy team co-ordinator, for 1998.
