Warwick IMRC is committed to carrying out high quality, high impact research that is relevant to UK manufacturing industry.  As most problems in life are multidisciplinary it makes sense to tackle research challenges in a multidisciplinary way.  In the past multidisciplinary research proposals have often struggled to obtain funding from the traditional research councils: this is a situation where WIMRC believes it can make a difference by setting an example and encouraging others to follow.

In selecting projects for funding WIMRC seeks those that offer the potential to instigate fundamental change and improvement.

WIMRC selected four research focus areas for the period 2006 to 2011:

  • Intelligent Vehicles
  • Eco-Friendly Vehicles
  • Next Generation Healthcare Management
  • Next Generation Healthcare Technology

These focus areas were selected on the basis that they could be key to the future prosperity of the UK for a number of reasons including:

  • An ageing population that is placing increasing demands on the healthcare system;
  • A transport infrastructure that is running at or above planned capacity with no sign of demand falling or stabilising in the foreseeable future;
  • Dwindling supplies of the world’s natural resources forcing all consumers to use resources more efficiently and in a sustainable manner;
  • Climate change driven by man made emissions and pollution requiring the identification of renewal energy and material sources and the reduction of non-recyclable wastes.

WIMRC draws upon its many competencies in design, management and technology to produce sustainable research outcomes with the intention wherever possible of making a difference.
