Cyber Security Research

WMG's Cyber Security Centre meets the requirement, from governments and industry, for multi-disciplinary approaches to cyber security research. We deliver this through research capacity focusing on both the technical and the behavioural (culture, cognition and communication) aspects.

The Cyber Security Centre (CSC) focuses on constructive innovation and on the rigorous foundational thinking needed to forge a new understanding of the nature of the cyber environment and on novel, transformative approaches to protecting the human experience within it.

WMG cyber security research is a mixed portfolio of publicly funded projects and activities undertaken in collaboration with government offices and others within the defence and law enforcement sectors who require help with operational activities.

Current Projects

  • PETRAS (EPSRC) - Privacy, Ethics, Trust, Reliability, Acceptability and Security. A collaborative UK Research Hub established to address the new challenges arising as the objects and services we use in our daily lives become increasingly “connected” – the Internet of Things (IoT). Carsten Maple, Cyber Security GRP Academic Co-Lead and Professor of Cyber Systems Engineering at the Cyber Security Centre in the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) leads the Privacy and Trust Stream and projects in Transport and Mobility, and Control Systems and Supply Chain. More broadly, research will examine how data is stored, transmitted and used to ensure privacy is maintained, and will analyse how consent, privacy and protection issues are addressed.   • E-CRIME: A collaborative European project aimed at addressing the issues around cybercrime within non-ICT sectors such as health, energy, finance and transport. The project will offer measures of the economic impact and develop concrete measures to manage and deter cyber crime. The approach is inter-disciplinary and end-user focused. Find out more>>
  • UNDERWARE: In this project we aim to gain a greater understanding of West African culture in order to prevent and deter cybercrime. Find out more>>

  • DAPM: Detecting and Preventing Mass Marketing Fraud (EPSRC) - The EPSRC-funded DAPM project will develop novel techniques to detect and prevent online mass marketing fraud (MMF), a major and growing problem that generates significant social anxiety and psychological impact. Through a multi-disciplinary approach and close focus on co-designing solutions collaboratively and testing them 'in the wild', the project will generate not only new scientific understanding of the anatomy of MMF, but also tools and techniques that can form the basis of practical interventions in tackling such fraud.   • CARMA: Cloud-Assisted Real-time Methods for Autonomy (EPSRC and Jaguar Land Rover). This collaborative project aims to design and validate a framework that combines the capability of connected vehicles with the notion of autonomous systems and build a novel platform for cost-effective development of autonomous features and ultimately realisation of connected and fully autonomous cars.

  • PRISMA -Piloting RRI in Industry: a roadmap for tranSforMAtive technologie with Tom Sorell, Paul Jennings, Kerry Kirwan, Duncan Hine, Funded by: European Commission.
  • Development of mutual-authentication and security platform for secure autonomous driving with Tim Watson, Funded by: Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
  • Connected Intelligent Transport Environment - UK CITE with Paul Jennings, Janet Godsell, Funded by: Technology Strategy Board.
  • Innovative Testing of Autonomous Control Techniques (INTACT) with Paul Jennings, Gunwant Dhadyalla, Stewart Birrell, Funded by: Technology Strategy Board.
  • Automated Defence Analysis Engine Project - Phase 2 with Tim Watson, Pamela Watt, Andrew Nicholson, Funded by: Thinking Safe Limited.

Working with us

We engage in research, education and knowledge transfer activities and welcome the opportunity to partner with new organisations. Members of the Group are available for consultancy in all aspects of cybersecurity and can engage in research directly for industry, government and public bodies. Such relationships form an important part of what we do since this ensures a deep touch-point on the issues and challenges being faced across business and society.

Where appropriate, we can create multi-disciplinary teams from across the University of Warwick, and we are actively building such relationships all the time.

Our delivery is guided by the following principles:

Our work can be grouped broadly into the following categories:

  • Blue-Sky Research: high risk, long term but with potential for very high impact, always driven by an understanding of current and future stakeholder needs.
  • Applied Research and Development: innovative and technically challenging research working with stakeholders to deliver step changes today or in the near future.
  • Consultancy: providing expertise directly into partners’ projects.
  • Education: creating links between our areas of research and our education programmes
