Electric Vehicles are silent - so what does this mean?

  • Silent electric vehicles pose problems for pedestrians, especially partially sighted people.
  • Advances in technology mean that electric vehicles have the potential to sound like anything - but what does this mean for the soundscapes of our towns and cities?
  • How will manufacturers design electric vehicle sound to align with their brand?

To tackle these challenges, Experiential Engineering's partners NoViSim and ECTunes have developed the capability to design exterior car sounds, to then simulate this sound as experienced by a pedestrian, and to use a software module for playback of the designed sounds from a vehicle ( linked to the vehicle’s dynamic state ).

This technology has been built into ELVIN - our Electric Vehicle With Interactive Noise. Read more here...

What is Experiential Engineering?

People’s experiences of new products and environments (in terms of the varying ways that they perceive and use them) can play a large part in their success, but are much harder to quantify than more objective or functional qualities. Our aim is therefore to improve decision making throughout product and environment development by applying a multidisciplinary approach to the most effective and efficient capture, analysis and use of these varying experiences. We call this 'experiential engineering'. We work across different application sectors, including automotive and healthcare.
