MA in English Language Teaching (with a Specialism in ICT and Multimedia)

This is a one year, full-time programme of study available to both pre- and post-experience students. It consists of a taught course followed by a dissertation. Its aim is to provide an understanding of the theoretical foundations of language teaching, and to explore the relationship between theory and different uses of ICT that can be applied to language teaching. It offers lots of opportunities to practice and use a whole variety of ICT tools and applications and to understand how these tools underpin and link to current theories of language learning. The course has four main aims:

    1. Learn about a variety of current ict tools like podcasting, wikis, blogs, Second Life, animation, 3D, word cloud tools, collaborative tools etc and link their use to current theories of language learning. Real hands of experience of using the tools and relating them through group and class based discussion.
    2. Look at the future of ICT. Work with iPads, iPods, the new genre IWBs, virtual classrooms ( like WebEx and Adobe Connect) etc and look at the emerging issues in the field. This would include things like distance learning through virtual classrooms, the role of the flipped classroom, autonomy, digital literacies and out of class language learning.
    3. Cover the growing body of research that is emerging from developments in web 2.0, Second Life, virtual learning environments etc. There was a period when there was a considerable lack of research in technology but this is rapidly changing and the course attempts to look at this research and link it to the tools and technologies that you are exposed to on the course.
    4. Develop your PLN ( Personal Learning Network) so that you will be able to continue to develop and expand your knowledge beyond the limits of this course.
