ELT(MM): Innovation in Multimedia for English Language Teaching

What students have said about the MA in ELT(MM):

I was a little apprehensive about starting a course based on the use of new technologies, because I was not very skilful at using computers. But after finishing the professional practice module I felt very confident about the use of multimedia to design materials for my students and I was amazed to see all the great materials that my peers produced as well. It is just a matter of good training and a lot of practice. [Consuelo Cedano Pineda, Colombia]

The Centre for Applied Linguistics is more than just a university department. The tutors are welcoming and ready to give assistance to the students outside of normal class hours. They are very friendly and available. I thought I had arrived in a cultural wilderness away from Africa only to find the Centre for Applied Linguistics so welcoming. It is a department that cherishes hard work and developing the learner all round. I came to the university a novice in multimedia but I am going away full of knowledge. [Daniel Orina, Kenya]

Deciding to study at Warwick was both a professional and academic choice for me. It was important for me to choose a university with a high ranking and a course that was academically enriching. My search ended when I saw the Masters in ELT and Multimedia on the Warwick University website. Doing a Masters in ELT and Multimedia has been a great experience both in terms of academic growth and professional enhancement. When I came to Warwick I had very little knowledge of multimedia in ELT. I came with an expectation of learning new things that would be useful to me in my place of work. Surely, my expectations have been fulfilled as I can see a visible change in myself. The course gave me an opportunity to experiment with a range of technologies from blogs and wikis to WebQuests, from recording and editing audio materials, to making a video of my own. Today I am more confident about using multimedia. For me ‘technology’ is no more a word to be feared but an exciting field to be explored further.

Being the SSLC representative of the ELTAM group, I am aware that other ELTAM participants also feel the same about the course. As for me, I was able to realise my dream of making a film - a dream that became a reality through ELTAM. And never to be forgotten is the friendly support we got from our tutors – always encouraging and always there to dispel our fears. I will go back from here enriched with knowledge, confidence, and a whole lot of memories to be cherished forever. ELTAM has been the most rewarding and fulfilling experience of my professional life. [Vandana Lunyal, India]

Present multimedia systems bring great vitality to the language teaching-learning process, which generates enormous enthusiasm among educators for research on the combination of pedagogy and new technology. As an active promoter of the above-mentioned research direction, the Center here has been doing its best and has also borne fruitful results in both theory and practice. Upon completion of the ELTAM course, I firmly believe that students will become multimedia literate with the skills and experience to build their own language teaching or learning courseware. I feel lucky that the Center has provided a precious learning opportunity for me and I will make all possible effort to make people proud of me. [Yi Zhang, China]

Deciding to continue my studies at the University of Warwick by following an MA degree in English Language Teaching and Multimedia was one of the best choices I have ever made. The ELTAM MA has given me the skills necessary to enter the educational sector. It has developed the knowledge I gained in my first degree (BA in English Language and Literature) within the challenging and competing field of education. I have gained the technical knowledge and the pedagogical understanding of the role of technology and multimedia in the teaching and learning of English as an additional language. Now that everything is drawing to an end, this demanding yet enjoyable experience can only be described by three simple words; inventive, unique, exciting. [Rania Leventi, Cyprus]
