    Pre-Requisite English Programme (PREP)

The Pre-Requisite English Programme at Warwick, organised by the Centre for Applied Linguistics, is accredited by the British Council. It is an ideal language improvement programme for graduates who wish to prepare for further academic study, either at Warwick or at another university, and who need to improve their academic English to a high standard.

The Pre-Requisite English Programme (PREP) is designed to allow you to become a more independent and confident user of English in an academic context. You will develop the skills to self-correct and self-audit your own writing and speaking, as well as to listen and to read English with the accuracy and ease needed for intensive study. We teach you in small groups with a maximum of 17 students per group to ensure you have the maximum opportunity to practice and improve your English language skills. The course will also introduce you to relevant aspects of British life, culture and institutions, and prepares you to work in your subject field.

Throughout your time on the PREP course you will have a Personal Tutor, who will be available to help with any problems you may encounter and in particular to help you find further help from experts throughout the University.

    Course structure and content

    COURSE STRUCTURE

The Pre-Requisite English Programme is a modular course: PREP A, PREP B, PREP C and PREP D.

PREP ‘A’ is at Lower B2 level and normally requires a level of 4.5 - 5.0 IELTS / 50-65 iBT TOEFL / 30-40 PTE for acceptance. In this term, you will bring your skills in English grammar, reading, writing, speaking and listening up to a level that will allow you to make effective progress in your more specialised studies in the second term. This module is usually taught during the Autumn Term.

PREP ‘B’ is at Intermediate B2 level and normally requires a level of 5.0 - 5.5 IELTS / 60-85 iBT TOEFL / 40-50 PTE for acceptance. During this term you will focus on using English for study purposes especially those related to your academic field.

PREP ‘C’ is at Upper B2 level and normally requires a level of 5.5 - 6.0 IELTS / 80-90 iBT TOEFL / 50-60 PTE for acceptance. During this term, there is more opportunity to concentrate on material closely related to your future degree work.

PREP ‘D’ (taught during the Summer Vacation Pre-Sessional Phases 1 and 2) is mainly aimed at students with a B2 or Lower C1 level; entry level depends on the requirements of the department where you will complete your degree. You will be working to make sure you are fully competent to follow a post-graduate degree course at Warwick University.

All course books and materials are provided as an inclusive part of the course. The maximum class size is normally 17 students.

We have expressed these levels in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF) which gives a list of things you are able to do in the language and relates these to a scale which ranges from A1 (Beginner level) to C2 (Expert user level).

Depending on the language level requirements of your degree course, you should decide how many terms of study you need. If you need three or four terms of study, you should begin the course in the Autumn term before you intend to begin your Post Graduate studies and complete a full year of English. If you only need to ‘polish’ your skills and become accustomed to academic life in the UK, then you may wish to join us for Phase 2 of the summer Pre-Sessional PREP course. We have included the IELTS, TOEFL and PTE scores for convenience only: they are not directly equivalent to the CEF bands which are very broad.

    Social Activities

Students take part in social activities during the year, and each term, an excursion is arranged to a place of historical and cultural interest.

Self-access facilities are available in the department for additional private study. These include a multi-media centre and a well-stocked resources room with computers, books, cassettes and CD-ROMs that students can use in their own time. All course books and materials are provided as an inclusive part of the PREP Course.
