Research Interests

I am particularly interested in motivational issues in language learning and intercultural engagement. I also work in the area of learner autonomy and teacher education and development. My general preference is for qualitative methods of inquiry.

I have been working in language education since 1982 and have taught in Japan, Ireland and the UK. I have conducted in-service courses and workshops on motivation and autonomy for language teachers from many countries including China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan and Russia. I obtained my PhD in 1996 from Trinity College, Dublin, where I was also involved in developing and coordinating institution-wide language programmes, and in designing and evaluating a version of the Council of Europe's European Language Portfolio for use in Irish secondary schools. I moved to Warwick in 2002 where I teach on MA and PhD courses. As Director of Graduate Studies I have responsibility for our PhD programme and for overseeing our postgraduate teaching and learning provision.
