The Warwick ELT Archive

Since 2002, the Centre for Applied Linguistics (formerly, CELTE) has been building up a historical collection of materials relating to the teaching of English as a foreign language and the development of applied linguistics, c.1880–c.1980. In March 2005 we took over the care of a substantial existing collection, the Edinburgh Dakin Collection. Housed mainly in the Centre's Learning Resources Room, the Warwick ELT Archive now constitutes a unique resource for students, teachers, researchers and others interested in the history of ELT, and/or history of language teaching and applied linguistics more broadly. We welcome enquiries from potential doctoral students and other researchers interested in working with the Archive. We are also exploring ways of making selected resources accessible online. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: During 2009 The British Council has given significant support to the Warwick ELT Archive, enabling a large number of previously uncatalogued items to be catalogued and shelved.
The Warwick ELT Archive consists primarily of:
There is also provision for storage and consultation of primary sources, including:

To date we have received significant donations from the following institutions and individuals, to whom we are very grateful:
