Research Interests

My main research interests are professional and medical communication. I am particularly interested in leadership, and the many advantages of approaching leadership through discourse. I have researched and published widely on various aspects of leadership discourse, gender, the multiple functions and strategic uses of humour, politeness and impoliteness, identity construction, the role of culture, and other aspects of workplace discourse in a range of different professional, medical, and more recently also sports contexts.

I welcome applications for PhD and Postdoc research in all of these areas.

I am currently involved in several research projects. Together with Dr Kieran File I am working on two projects funded by ESRC impact acceleration grants analysing the language of coaching with Boxing England, and exploring decision making processes with a Formula One racing team. More about this work, and other activities of the Sports, Culture and Communication Research Cluster can be found here: https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/al/research/groups/sccrc.

I am also a founding member and co-lead of the interdisciplinary research network on Academic Mobilities and Immobilities (https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/ces/research/amin).

Together with colleagues in the UK, Belgium, France and Denmark I am currently working on several research publications, including an edited volume on Globalisation, Geopolitics and Gender: Professional Communication at Work; a special issue of Leadership on Leadership in Interaction, and a special issue of Narrative Inquiry on Narratives as Practice in Organizational Contexts.
