What is the Better Communication Research Programme?
The Better Communication Research Programme is part of the government's response to the Bercow Review of provision for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs, published July 2008.
The government published its response Better Communication, the speech language and communications needs (SLCN) action plan in December 2008, which committed to a series of initiatives to improve services for children and young people with SLCN culminating in the National Year of Speech, Language and Communication in 2011.
We have a number of projects underway. We will produce summaries of these for you from time to time. More technical reports are also available.
We also want to involve parents - and children and young people - in our work. So we will have surveys and information about these (see right).
Who are we?
Geoff Lindsay, Julie Dockrell, James Law and Sue Roulstone lead the BCRP. We are all very experienced researchers and are also qualified practitioners, as teachers and educational psychologists or speech and language therapists.
Specialist expertise is provided by Anna Vignoles and Jenni Beecham who are economists; Steve Strand specialises in analysis of national dataset and Tony Charman is a specialist in autism.
We also have a large team of researchers and other senior researchers carrying out the different research projects. See staff for name details.
