EVALUATION OF CAPITAL MODERNISATION FUNDING PROJECT TO INTRODUCE ELECTRONIC REGISTRATION IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Directors: Geoff Lindsay (CEDAR), Daniel Muijs (University of Manchester) and Dimitra Hartas (WIE),

With: Susan Band (CEDAR) , Dr Chris Hasluck (IER) and Dr Ray Evans (City of Coventry)

There has been mounting concern over pupils who fail to attend school. Research has shown a variety of factors related to this phenomenon, including family problems and poverty. On the other hand, schools are differentially successful in maximising attendance, and this is not explained simply by social disadvantage. Over recent years a number of electronic systems have been developed to monitor attendance, not only at the start of sessions but in individual lessons. The government implemented a major capital programme which allowed secondary schools with high levels of non-attendance to install new electronic systems and this study evaluated the programme over 2002-06. The study included analysis of large datasets on schools as well as case studies of schools using different systems and with different contexts.

The project was directed by Professor Geoff Lindsay and Dr Daniel Muijs (University of Manchester), and included Susan Band from CEDAR. In addition Dr Ray Evans, Head of Education Access Coventry LEA, and Associate Research Fellow in CEDAR, and Dr Chris Hasluck, Institute of Employment Research, University of Warwick, provided specialist advice. It was funded by the Department for Education and Skills.
