MA/MSc by Research

The Master's Degree by Research allows a student the opportunity to examine one area of education in depth and is focused on producing a 40,000 word dissertation. This is an alternative route to gaining a Master's level qualification, which appeals to students with a clear focus for their study. Students who choose this route are confident to undertake self-directed research.

The dissertation route is assessed at Master's level and is likely to include less data collection than an MPhil/PhD. However, as with the MPhil/PhD, students work primarily on a one-to-one basis with a supervisor who is an experienced researcher in the field.

Students will be required to complete the Foundation Research Methods course, although this is not part of the assessment. The MA/MSc by Research is examined entirely on the thesis and the viva.
