Developing mathematical resilience in learners 1:1

In this project, we are developing case studies that explore recovery from maths anxiety and maths exclusion, and seeking to 'manualise' an intervention to develop mathematical resilience in individual learners.

Cases thus far include:

"Jackie" who has developed mathematical resilience as an adult. An article about Jackie's case was published in Creative Education in September 2021.

Hani who has developed statistical resilience, after avoiding statistics for many years including whilst he was completing a PhD. An article about Hani's statistical empowerment was published in Creative Education in June 2018Link opens in a new window.

"Anne" who has found the hand model of the brainLink opens in a new window very effective in addressing her own angst around mathematics.

"Molly" who has developed number resilience whilst working as a Teaching Assistant and undertaking her MA; Molly has now passed her maths test and is training as a secondary teacher of humanities.

"Poppy" (age 10) who began to stammer when repeatedly publically asked a mathematics tables question she didn't know yet and learned that she can choose not to answer rather than to stammer; sometimes her teacher remembers to only ask Poppy when her hand is up.

A paper about this work was presented at a conference in Summer 2017; a copy is available hereLink opens in a new window.
