Chris Hughes is Senior Research Fellow and Deputy Director at the CSGR. Previously he was Research Associate at the Institute for Peace Science, Hiroshima University. From 2000-2001 he was Visiting Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Tokyo. He holds degrees from the universities of Oxford (BA and MA), Rochester (MA), and Sheffield (MA and PhD). Research scholarships have been received from the Japanese Ministry of Education, the Japan Foundation Endowment Committee, the European Union, and the British Academy. His research interests include Japanese foreign and security policy; Japanese international political economy; regionalism in East Asia; Japanese radicalism and terrorism; post-Cold War traditional and non-traditional security policy, and North Korea's external political and economic relations. He has published articles in English and Japanese in journals such as Survival, The Pacific Review, Review of International Political Economy, and Security Dialogue. He is associate editor of The Pacific Review, and is a participant in the European Committee of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific (CSCAP). Currently he is working on projects which examine Japan's response to issues of globalisation and governance; the intersection of globalisation and security, with particular reference to the Asia-Pacific region; and the impact on regional and global security of missile defence. He teaches the course on the International Relations of Pacific Asia in PAIS, and currently supervises PhD students in the areas of Japanese foreign and security policy, Japan and globalisation, inter-Korean politics, and security studies.
