Postgraduate Study - PhD Programme in Economics

    Why Warwick?

The department of economics at Warwick is one of the best in the UK and is highly respected worldwide. The department is internationally recognized in many fields, including micro theory, macro and international finance, econometrics, industrial economics, public economics, development/international economics, and labour economics. The department has approximately 50 full-time faculty members, and our Ph.D. programme is small enough (approximately 20 new students admitted each year) to provide detailed Ph.D. supervision but large enough to offer expertise in a wide range of fields.

The Ph.D. programme is designed to equip students with an in-depth knowledge of the core fields of economics as well as provide them with more specialized knowledge of their field of specialization The programme is research based and involves writing a publishable dissertation. At the same time, it requires students to undertake advanced course work (click here to see the structure of the programme). It is designed to equip graduates for careers in academic institutions or in the public or private sectors. Our graduates have been placed in leading academic and nonacademic departments in a variety of countries. Click here to see the placement of our most recent Ph.D. graduates.

The department is affiliated with several research centres, including the Centre for the Study of Globalization and Regionalization (CSGR) and the centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy (CAGE). In addition a number of journals are edited at Warwick. Finally, the department sponsors many conferences and workshops and has an active research seminar programme (click here to see a list of this year's seminar speakers).

The university is located on the outskirts of Coventry, and is a self-contained campus with residences, shops, and many social facilities. In particular, the Warwick Arts Centre offers an impressive schedule of concerts, plays, and cinema. In addition there are many sports facilities available to all students.

Since Coventry is in the heart of England, it is possible to travel to many interesting tourist destinations in a short time. For example, historic Warwick, Shakespeare's Stratford, and the Cotswold countryside are within a half hour or so of the campus, and London is only one hour away by train.
