Careers and Employability

Case studies

"The purpose of applying for an economics master for me was very clear: gain a thorough knowledge of economics and start a career outside of academia"; read more.

Enhancing your employability and career prospects

Completing an Economics MSc is a great way to enhance your career prospects, and the high quality reputation of our courses makes our graduates highly sought after by employers.

Our MSc students go on to do great things; working in government public policy settings, and in private-sector businesses as specialist economists.

Previous Warwick graduates have gone on to roles in a range of sectors including consultancy, finance and banking, or in further academic research.

There are plenty of opportunities to develop many of the attributes required by employers during your time at The University of Warwick.

Skills developed

We believe that whilst studying your MSc, you will acquire a range of subject knowledge, cognitive skills, and professional skills.

Employability skills such as communication, planning and teamwork can also be developed by active involvement in extra-curricular activities, as well as enhanced language skills and cultural awareness for international students.

Masters Skills Programme

Develop your skills further with the Masters Skills Programme. Workshop topics including critical thinking, speed reading, working in a team and exam revision.

Details of these workshops are provided throughout the year.

English language classes

Students from other countries may wish to take one of the free in-sessional English language classes.

This will help your written work, reading, and understanding during lectures and seminars and also help improve your job prospects as employers will value language skills.

How we can help

Stephanie Redding, Careers Consultant for Economics, offers Dedicated careers workshops for Economics MSc students covering some of the popular career options and the skills required for these; effective job applications, and other aspects of career choice and development.

Stephanie runs 30 minute 'careers guidance' appointments within the Department throughout the term. These can be useful no matter what stage you are at in your career thinking. Student Careers and Skills staff also run 20 minute appointments, for CV or application form checking, at University House. These can be booked via the 'View Available Appointments' section on myAdvantage.

Early in the autumn term each year, Student Careers and Skills arrange Careers Fairs that are attended by a range of employers and institutions. For those employment sectors unlikely to send staff to attend a careers fair (for example International Development), Student Careers and Skills organises a series of ‘Sector Events’ in the late autumn and into the Spring Term. The Department also organises an Economics Careers Fair in the autumn term.

myAdvantage lists hundreds of relevant jobs and internship opportunities throughout the year.

You can also take advantage of networking opportunities such as e-mentoring and LinkedIn groups, where you can make contact with a substantial group of current alumni who are keen to share information about their fields and careers.

Prospects, the national careers website for university students and recent graduates, is a useful resource and includes a list of job areas and job vacancies. Also see Target Jobs and milkround.

The Economics Society organises many careers talks and employer visits for its members.

The Department arranges the 360 Lecture Series, which allows you to meet leading figures in the world of economics, and gain insights into future career options.
