Research Interests
Economic history, Economic growth.

Comparative productivity performance of Britain, the United States and Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries. Productivity in services. Development of the world economy since 1000. The "Great Divergence" between Europe and Asia. Macroeconomic history of 20th century Britain. Economics of the two world wars.

CEPR Economic History Initiative

I am co-ordinator with Kevin O'Rourke of the CEPR Economic History Initiative. One of the EHI's activities is an EU-funded Research Training Network Unifying the European Experience: Historical Lessons of Pan-European Develoment. Discussion of the activities of the RTN occurs on a wiki on the CEPR website.
