    EC229 Economics of Strategy

    Context

    12 CATS. This module forms the core of the second-or third-year combined (micro and macro) economic analysis for WBS students. This module is also available to other students from outside the Economics department.

    Students who have taken EC131 Economics for Business and EC229 Economics of Strategy are eligible to take EC335 Managerial Economics

    This module has a pre-requisite of EC131 and is restricted to WBS students on single honours or joint degrees with WBS

    Teaching format

    A total of 25 lectures and 6 seminars over the Spring and Summer terms.

    Assessment methods

    1 x2–hour examination (100%)

    Academic aims

    To develop the concepts and insights gained from Economics for Business which mainly explores short run business issues. This module will examine the longer run aspects of business and the economic environment in which companies operate in order:

    To equip students with an understanding of fundamental concepts in micro and macroeconomics, as relevant for the study of strategic decisions of firms.

    To develop a range of appropriate analytical skills, including descriptive, graphical and elementary mathematical methods used in the economic analysis of strategy To develop in students the capacity to apply analytical techniques to real world business problems and strategy choices.

    We will refer to different textbooks at different parts of the module. The following will be used.

    Begg, Fischer and Dornbusch Economics 9th edition . ( 10th edition due in 2011)

    Morgan, Katz and Rosen’s Microeconomics 2nd edition 2010

    Blanchard , Amighinii and Giavazzi Macroeconomics 2010 or Blanchard 5th edition

    Besanko, Dranove, Shanley and Schaeffer Economics of Strategy 5th edition
