Adviza - Gearing Up for STEM skills strategy and action plan

Introduction

In mid-January 2017, Adviza commissioned the University of Warwick, Institute for Employment Research (IER) to undertake the design of a STEM Strategy and Action Plan covering six geographical areas: Slough, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Bracknell Forest, Wokingham, Reading and West Berkshire. We define STEM as science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics, following the UK Commission for Employment & Skills (2013) report on 'The Supply and Demand for High level STEM Skills’.[1] In this context, STEM occupations and sectors are divided into:

  • Core STEM areas (comprising: Biological sciences; Agricultural sciences; Physical / environmental sciences; Mathematical sciences and computing; Engineering, Technology and Architecture); and
  • Medicine and related STEM (comprising medicine and dentistry and medical related subjects).

The STEM Strategy and Action Plan is part one of a series of STEM activities in Berkshire that will be rolled out by Adviza with its partners over a two-year period (2017 -2019). This will build upon earlier work undertaken by the Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (TVBLEP) drawing on its published ‘Skills Priority Statement 2016’

It will also help inform strategic and operatioal plans that build upon the government's recently published Industrial Strategy ' Building our Industrial Strategy: Green Paper, January 2017.
