Migration and mobility

Labour migration and the geographical mobility of workers are key components of the way in which labour markets function. IER has long experience in analysing commuting and migration within the UK and has recently undertaken research into the impact of migrant workers on regional and local labour markets. Drawing on its knowledge of migration data sources, IER has produced guides to information sources on migration for both the UK and the EU. IER has examined the inter-relationships and trade-offs between migration and commuting, issues relating to short-term migration, the location and mobility decisions of dual career households, and the impact of job-related geographical mobility on individuals and families. Other research projects have addressed the experience of new international labour migrants to the UK and the labour market experience of ethnic minorities. More generally, ongoing work is exploring rationales for mobility and immobility, with particular reference to labour market issues.
