The School of Law was established in 1969 and has since developed into one of the leading Law Schools in the UK. Its teaching standards and research quality consistently receive high ratings, and the University itself ranks amongst the leading half-dozen research and teaching institutions in the UK.

The School of Law is located in the Social Studies Faculty of the university. The School has a student population of about 750 (550 undergraduates and 200 postgraduates) with 40 full-time academic and, at any one time, close to a dozen research fellows. The School has a strong research culture and all staff are active researchers in their own areas of expertise.

Two distinctive features of the School of Law are its contextual approach to the study of law and its commitment to offering an international perspective on law.

• The contextual approach has been developed at Warwick for over forty years. Our aim is to avoid treating law as if it can be separated from other aspects of society. So as well as studying legal judgments and statutes, students also examine the impact of economic, cultural and political change on law and consider how law affects life beyond the court-room and the lawyer's office.
• The School encourages comparative and international perspectives on law and this approach influences courses offered at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The international nature of the School is refelected in the cosmopolitan nature of the student body, it being common for there to be students from twenty or more countries studying here at any one time. The teaching staff too are varied in their backgrounds and most have extensive international experience.

Warwick provides excellent facilities and support for students. The University library system contains in excess of 750,000 volumes and the University has a fully developed Campus Data Network providing access to a central core of computer services, to personal computers and to workstations across the University.

Warwick also served as the location for the Law Courseware Consortium, responsible for developing Iolis, a comprehensive collection of electronic course materials in the main law subjects, the UK Centre for Legal Education (UKCLE), which supports teaching and learning in law, and Warwick Legal Training
