Human Rights Impact Assessments
The Centre has considerable expertise in the field of human rights impact assessments. Led by Dr James Harrison, a number of research, training and capacity building projects have been undertaken. Assistance has been provided to civil society organisations, government officials, and other bodies in how to undertake human rights impact assessments in a number of fields.
Writing Wrongs
The purpose of this project is to bring together professionals writing about wrongs across intersecting disciplines. Journalists, creative writers of both fiction and non-fiction, lawyers, historians, philosophers and sociologists who write in response to past and present injustices, who may be seeking their redress or simply bringing them to public attention. The project aims to establish a network of parties engaged in writing about wrongs, to share strategies and critique about technique and content.
International Criminal Law
Since 2002 Andrew Williams has been involved in various projects analysing the Iraq War and the subsequent occupation from a legal perspective. In 2008 he co-edited a book on the subject The Iraq War and International Law (Hart Publishing). The project work continues in relation to the on-going Public Inquiries into allegations regarding abuse of Iraqi citizens by UK Army personnel. Work under this branch also involves PhD research projects and lectures on the various facets of International Criminal Law.
Fundamental Rights Agency
In association with the University's Centre for Rights Equality and Diversity, Andrew Williams has been contracted by the EU's Fundamental Rights Agency to provide advice and support on fundamental rights information for the Agency's Info Portal. He is registered as a Senior Expert for this purpose.
Capacity Building
The Centre for Human Rights in Practice provides research and capacity building support to a number of human rights organisations and practitioners. We harness the Centre's academic expertise and utilise that to inform the policy and practice of human rights organisations and practitioners in a number of fields.
