General Editorial

We are delighted to offer our readers this special issue on Legal Pluralism. While colonial 'traditionalisms' continue to influence our post-colonial discussions of the subject, the topic has become of much broader significance with contemporary developments such as the new Lex Mercatoria, a revived Sharia and the plural governance mechanisms for cyberspace. This issue is therefore offered to readers in the hope of inspiring new debates.

We are grateful to Dr. Fauzia Shariff for taking responsibility as Issue Editor and commend her energy, efficiency and growing authority in the subject. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our reviewers for their care, fairness and constructive suggestions. Finally, I would like to thank Sabrina Zheng, Mahsa Baraza and Paul Trimmer for their assistance.

Apart from the Special Feature, we have also included an additional article by Professor Issa Shivji, who we congratulate for being appointed to the inaugural Nyerere Chair of Pan-African Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. We dedicate the paper to the Festschrift Volume for Professor Upen Baxi and offer it as a 70th Birthday Present to Upen.
