RESEARCH PROFILEDr Octavio Ferraz's research interests are in the field of law and development, especially the impact of law in social justice, and comparative and international human rights, particularly in the area of economic and social rights and the role of courts in the enforcement of those rights. |
BACKGROUNDLLB and MPhil in Law (University of São Paulo), MA in Medical Ethics and Law (King's College, London, prize Benjamin Geijsen), PhD in Law (University College London), Member of the Bar (São Paulo) Before joining Warwick Law School in August 2006, Dr Octavio Ferraz was a senior research officer at the Right to Health Unit, Human Rights Centre, University of Essex, where he worked with Professor Paul Hunt (UN special rapporteur for the right to health) on a research project commissioned by the British Medical Association involving the right to health and the duties it entails under international law (see publications and research below). Dr Octavio Ferraz is now taking part in an international project funded by the Ford Foundation and led by Prof. Oscar Vilhena (Fundacao Getulio Vargas, Sao Paulo, Brazil) on the justiciability of fundamental rights in the supreme courts of India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA project). Before moving to academia, he practised law in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for over ten years, where he is still a member of the Bar. |
