The Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) - Trainers Course
A three day course for experienced housing professionals to enable them to train others in the new HHSRS risk assessment system which will come into force as part of the Housing Act 2004. A feature of this course is that delegates will return to their places of work after day one of the course to apply elementary HHSRS principles in practice. The course will resume not less than two weeks later to develop and reinforce delegates' learning and to instruct them in the training package to be used to train others on a cascade principle.
Introduction
HHSRS wil completely change the way local authorities assess housing conditions. All housing staff will need to be able to apply it in their everyday practice. This course is an extremely cost effective way for an Authority to train up its staff. It can select senior staff to be trained who will also be equipped with and trained on a specially prepared training package designed by Warwick University. Those completing the course will be given the package and licensed to train others using the package.
Content
This course follows best training practice by developing the delegates learning and understanding in five stages:
-
Understanding the principles of HHSRS and how to apply them in practice. On day one of the course, delegates will be given both group and individual practical exercises to develop their understanding;
-
Applying those principles in the delegates own work environment. At the end of day one, delegates will be given a task sheet to be used in their own property evaluations. These must be completed before day two of the course;
-
Using HHSRS with consistency and precision. On the morning of day two of the course, delegates will reinforce their ability to understand and apply the principles by reviewing their task sheets under the expert guidance of the tutors.
-
Learning training skills. Delegates will not be able to train others successfully unless they have good trainig skills. The afternoon session of day two will be a crash course in training techniques. The delegates will be divided into groups. Each delegate will given a videoed micro teach to the rest of the group. The micro teaches will involve different skills, e.g. lecturing, handling small groups, questioning etc and will also deal with different training issues e.g. ensuring equal participation, handling difficult delegates, giving feedback etc. There will be a short training session on using Powerpoint.
-
Training using the Warwick HHSRS package. On day three of the course, delegates will not only be instructed in the use of the package but will be required to deliver part of it to the rest of the group. The tutors will give detailed feedback to each delegate. The course will end with a plenary session in which both training and HHSRS issues may be raised.
