Dr Tom Long will join PAIS with effect from 1 September, 2017 as an Assistant Professor in Rising World Powers.
Dr Long is currently a Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Reading and Affiliated Professor at the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas in Mexico City. His work focuses on the dynamics of asymmetry in IR, particularly in the Americas.
Tom's first book, Latin America Confronts the United States: Asymmetry and Influence (Cambridge University Press, 2015) was recently named in Foreign Affairs' “Best Books of 2016” list. He has published and forthcoming articles in International Security, International Studies Review, International Politics, Diplomatic History, Latin American Research Review, The Latin Americanist, and Foro Internacional.
Tom's current work examines the role of regionalism in Brazilian and Mexican foreign policies post-World War II. It has received support from the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust and the Truman Library Institute. He also recently received a Researcher Links grant from the British Council for a collaborative project on post-conflict Colombian foreign policy with the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota. Tom received a Ph.D. in International Relations from American University in 2013.
With Tom's appointment PAIS adds significant new research and teaching expertise in Latin American politics and we are delighted to be welcoming him to the Department.
