Jan Aart Scholte is Professor in PAIS and Professorial Research Fellow in the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation (CSGR) at the University of Warwick. Before coming to Warwick in 1999, he worked at the University of Sussex, Brighton and the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague. Jan Aart has also held visiting positions at Cornell University, the London School of Economics, the International Monetary Fund, Moscow State University, Gothenburg University, and Jawaharlal Nehru University. Jan Aart is author of Globalization: A Critical Introduction (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2005 second edition, third edition forthcoming 2012) and International Relations of Social Change (Open University Press, 1993); co-author of Contesting Global Governance (Cambridge University Press, 2000); editor of Building Global Democracy? Civil Society and Accountable Global Governance (Cambridge University Press, 2011) and Civil Society and Global Finance (Routledge, 2002); and co-editor of the Encyclopaedia of Globalization (Routledge, 2006) and Global Civil Society Yearbook 2009 (Sage, 2009); as well as author of some 100 articles, chapters and working papers. In 2009 he completed a policy report on IMF Relations with Member Countries: The Civil Society Dimension for the Independent Evaluation Office of the International Monetary Fund. Jan Aart's current research focuses on questions of governing a more global world, with particular emphasis on democracy in this context. In 2008-12 he is coordinating a major international project on 'Building Global Democracy', with a core grant from the Ford Foundation, together with co-conveners in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, North America and the Pacific. The project will generate half a dozen volumes on subjects such as conceptualising global democracy, learning for global democracy, including the excluded in global politics, structural redistribution for global democracy, and intercultural constructions of global democracy. In terms of PhD research, Jan Aart has supervised dissertations on topics including alter-globalisation movements, the regulation of global finance, global governance and 'development', global production of 'good governance' norms, corporate social responsibility, NGO accountability, and intersections between international political economy and political theory. Jan Aart serves on the advisory boards of various institutes and programmes in global(isation) and regional(isation) studies around the world.
