The focus of my current work is Hegel's Phenomenology. I am writing an introduction to this text for Continuum and this work will keep me occupied for the next couple of years (at least). Beyond the Phenomenology, I am also interested in pursuing Hegel's claim that his speculative logic (set out in the Science of Logic) develops immanently and in contesting Heidegger's assertion that Hegel thinks ‘in accordance with a predetermined idea of being’ (an assertion endorsed by Derrida and Deleuze, amongst others). Part of my project is thus to show that many post-Hegelian philosophers seriously misunderstand the Hegel from which they seek to distance themselves. However, I am also interested in the often overlooked similarities between Hegel, Heidegger and Derrida, in particular regarding the deconstruction of the idea of ‘essence’ or ‘ground’ (a deconstruction carried out by Hegel in the logic of essence). Beyond the Logic, I work on Hegel's political philosophy, aesthetics and philosophy of religion; and beyond Hegel, I am especially interested in the thought of Spinoza, Kant, Fichte and Nietzsche, and in the theory of tragedy from Aristotle to the present.
Future projects include essays on Hegel's philosophy of action and on Kant's philosophy of history, as well as an essay on Hegel's account of quantity in the Science of Logic for a collection of essays on the Logic to be published by Felix Meiner.
