Entry Requirements
MPhil in Philosophy
Candidates are normally expected to have a first class honours BA degree in Philosophy, or a first class honours joint degree with a substantial Philosophy component. In addition, applicants are required to submit two samples of recent written work in Philosophy, max. 2,500 words each. It would also be helpful for applicants to list their preferred three areas of study in the personal statement section of their application.
Taught MA Programmes
Students are normally expected to have at least an upper second class BA degree in Philosophy to be admitted to the MA programmes. In the case of candidates for the joint MAs especially, a degree with a substantial component of Philosophy may be sufficient.
Students whose first degree is not in Philosophy may be admitted to the Diploma in Philosophy, a good pass in which will enable them to proceed to a taught MA programme.
Application Deadlines
In the case of candidates seeking funding through one of the scholarship programmes, it is important that we should receive applications for admission at least two months before the relevant deadline.
Students on taught graduate programmes are admitted to start their studies at the beginning of an academic year. Students applying directly for admission as a doctoral candidate can be admitted at any time, though preferably at the start of an academic year.
Applications can be submitted for consideration at any time. It should be noted, however, that in the case of admission to research programmes candidates cannot be accepted until an appropriate supervisor has been identified and this may on occasion take several weeks.
