School of Health and Social Studies

Our overarching objective is to deliver cutting-edge teaching and research at the interface of health, nursing, social work and social care, ethnicity and migration. We share an approach to teaching and research which pays attention to the relationship between major social divisions in society and how these impact on health, wellbeing and social care.

    The School’s ethos emphasises:

    • Excellence in teaching and research, with a clear foundation in a social and health science knowledge-base
    • Inter-disciplinarity, particularly at the interface of health and social care
    • Promoting research-mindedness in professional practice, in the formulation of policy and the development and delivery of services
    • Partnership and collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders
    • Involvement of practitioners as teachers, learners and researchers
    • Giving voice to patients, carers and service users from marginalised groups
    • Enhancement of social and health care services
    • Commitment to challenging social inequalities through the study of social divisions
    • Addressing local, regional, national and international research priorities
    • Commitment to research on knowledge transfer and translation to enhance our ability to provide evidence that is used in policy and practice.

    Research

The School of Health and Social Studies is a multidisciplinary multi-professional department with a strong inclusive and vibrant research ethos, with three well established research centres. These are the Institute of Health, the Royal College of Nursing Research Institute and the Centre for the Study of Safety and Wellbeing. The School's research is grounded in the need to demonstrate user benefit and professional relevance, whilst increasing our national and international collaborations.

    Service users, carers and patients

User, carer and patient involvement is an integral aspect of research and teaching, and is facilitated through the University - User Teaching and Research Action Partnership (UNTRAP), based in the Institute of Health. This was set up to develop user and carer involvement in teaching and research in health and social care at the University of Warwick, within SHSS and Warwick Medical School, and at the University of Coventry, and has been recognised as leading edge.
