Our PhD Students

learninggrid.jpgOur postgraduates come from a wide range of backgrounds which makes for an interesting and diverse student community both in terms of teaching and research. We welcome home and overseas students and encourage both full-time and part-time courses of study. At the present time, MA and doctoral candidates from the UK find themselves working alongside students from India, Russia, Lithuania, Bangladesh, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, South Africa, Ghana, China and Hong Kong. Current postgraduate research interests are similarly diverse. Current topic areas being investigated by research students include: creolisation and globalisation; the politics and morals of scientific culture; representations of black gay male identity; sexuality, social identities and schooling; sport and sectarianism in Northern Ireland; and migrant labour in Southern India - to name but a few!

As a department we pride ourselves on the vibrant nature of our postgraduate research community which has an established track record in facilitating highly productive working relationships between staff and students. Postgraduate students also enjoy the benefits of our commitment to excellence. There are 10 MA programmes run by the Department (or in conjunction with other Departments), plus an MA in Social Research which can also be combined with 7 areas of specialist interest. Recognition is currently being sought in 4 additional areas.

The Department is also a major provider of research training for students from elsewhere in the Faculty of Social Studies at Warwick. There are around 20 specialist modules available to many of our postgraduates, all of which are taught by staff with national and international reputations in the area. Students from both our taught and research postgraduate degree programmes go on to pursue a range of careers. Support and guidance is available for all our students, at both a departmental and university-wide level.
