Doctoral Degrees

Programmes of Study

The Department of Sociology offers supervision for MA, MPhil and PhD Research Degrees.  We have a large and vibrant community of doctoral students engaged in leading edge research and scholarship.  Here you may view some of the topics currently being researched.  Our doctoral programme is designed to ensure success in a demanding course of study.  Key to the strength of the programme is the close working relationship between you and your supervisors, who will be specialists in your field. All students are allocated two supervisors and are offered an extensive research methodology training programme to support their studies. We also offer other avenues of support to our doctoral students. Our doctoral students are integral to the Department's research culture; you will have opportunities to gain experience in teaching and to participate in a wide range of intellectual activities including seminar and conference presentation as well as conference organisation.  We encourage doctoral students to publish in scholarly journals and working papers and to share their work in other relevant arenas.  A substantial majority of our research students go on to make their careers in research and higher education.
