Our Students

Our postgraduates come from a wide range of backgrounds which makes for an interesting and diverse student community both in terms of teaching and research. We welcome home and overseas students and encourage both full-time and part-time courses of study. At the present time, research students from the UK find themselves working alongside students from India, Russia, Lithuania, Bangladesh, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, South Africa, China and Hong Kong.

Many of our MA/MSc students go on to register for PhD research. The Department of Sociology offers supervision for MA, MSc, MPhil and PhD Research Degrees. We have a large and vibrant community of doctoral students engaged in leading edge research and scholarship. Here you may view some of the topics currently being researched. Our doctoral programme is designed to ensure success in a demanding course of study.

Length of Study

All these courses are offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. Exceptionally, students may be registered for an MA by research.

• MA/MSc – 12 months (full time); 24 months (part-time)
• Postgraduate Diploma – 9 months (full time); 18 months (part-time)
• PhD's vary but the average time to complete is 3 years

Applications Applying on-line

In the first instance, you will need to complete an application form, in duplicate, which may be obtained from the University Graduate Office. The application form should be returned to the Graduate Office after completion. Alternatively, the application form is available on-line via the main University web site. It should be noted that electronic applications still require references, transcripts and, where appropriate, English language qualifications and these may have to be sent by post. alumni applicants

Warwick Alumni applicants will automatically be eligible to be considered for a Sociology Department Bursary (usually £1,000 for 1 year full-time applicants and £500 over 2 years for part-time applicants). There is no separate application process for this, decisions are usually made between July - August each year and successful applicants are notified via email. To be eligible you need to have applied and been offered a place on a Masters Degree in the Sociology Department.
