You may also be interested in a degree that provides an alternative or additional set of understandings that will extend your previous degree studies. MA Sociology addresses present day debates within the context of sustained intellectual Sociological traditions. Students will have the opportunity to study new work in cultural studies, work and employment, health and the body, social theory, gender studies, historical sociology, social policy and science studies.
Modules
This degree has considerable flexibility in option choice. Students select from a series of modules which change from year to year but which include both substantive and methodological concerns. Indicative modules include: Theory for a Global Age; Sociology of Health, Pain and Emotions, Sociology of Postcolonialism; Politics and Social Theory; Sex, Gender and Power; Theoretical Perspectives on Science, Media and Public Policy; Qualitative Methodologies; Quantitative Methodologies. All MA students take five modules and, with personal supervision from one of our leading scholars, research and write a 15,000 word dissertation.
Delivery Mode
The degree can be taken as one year full-time or two years part-time.
Entry Requirements
Candidates should have obtained at least second class honours in a first degree from an approved institution in Arts or Social Sciences, or equivalent professional experience. Other suitably qualified individuals will be considered. Students for whom English is not a first language are required to have gained an IELTS score of at least 6.5.

The MA Sociology provides you with a high level of transferable skills. These include: research and retrieval skills; communication and presentation; interpersonal group work; independent judgement. Our students undertake an MA either straight from undergraduate study or as a way of enhancing their professional skills and interests. Our students go on to a wide range of careers including teaching, media, accountancy, public and charitable sectors. Many of our students also progress to higher degree and PhD studies.
