The postgraduate application form is available online. It should be noted that electronic applications will require references, transcripts and, where appropriate, english language qualifications and research proposals to be sent before they can be considered, and these may have to be sent by post.

APPLY BY POST

Alternatively a written application form can be submitted, (two copies required), which may be obtained from the University Graduate Office. The application form should be returned to the Graduate Office after completion.

Deadlines 

Applications for PhD Programmes should be made directly to the University (not the Department). There is no set deadline but it is strongly recommended that you apply by 31st July for entry in the following October in order to allow enough time to secure accommodation and a student visa (if applicable). Late applications will always be considered. Please note that research degree applicants who will be applying for funding should ensure that they are aware of all relevant deadlines. They are advised to make earlier applications (January/February) and consult the University Graduate Office if funding is to be sought.

Supporting Documents

The following documents are required to enable the admissions tutor to reach a decision on your application, and later to verify the authenticity of your stated achievements and thereby clear conditions relating to offers:

Two academic references. If you apply online and provide e-mail addresses for your referees, they will receive a link to an online form that allows them to submit a reference electronically. This is the only acceptable way for a reference to be submitted electronically. The Student Admissions Office will not accept references by e-mail. Referees can send references to the Student Admissions Office but the reference must be on headed paper of their institution, and bear the referee's original signature. Please note that if you have been in education within 5 years before your start date, then your references must be academic and not professional/personal.

A transcript of your academic achievement. You can upload electronic versions of your transcript. If you are made an offer you must also forward an original or certified copies of your transcripts (official documents setting our details of subjects studies and grades obtained) to The Student Admissions Office. If your official transcript is not English, then an official certified translation should also be provided.

Students who are educated outside the UK or another English speaking country should forward their original or certified copies of certificates of their English language qualifications to Postgraduate Admissions.

A research proposal. This is a very important element of your application and should be a two or three page synopsis of their proposed research which includes: a statement of the field of research; aims and objectives of the research; the methodology involved.
