RESEARCH PROFILE

Nickie Charles's research focuses on women and gender. She is interested in the relation between gender divisions at work and at home and the ways in which women - through involvement in feminist social movements - can bring about social change. She is currently PI on a research project investigating gender and political processes in the context of devolution which is being carried out in collaboration with colleagues in Swansea. Prior to this she was involved in a 3-year, ESRC-funded research project exploring social change, family formation and kin relationships. This was a restudy of research into families and social change carried out in Swansea in the 1960s and published as The family and social change (Rosser and Harris, 1965). She has also investigated the gender dimensions of job insecurity, the effects of social ageing on health, and the mental health needs of women who have experienced domestic violence.

Her publications include Women, Food and Families, co-authored with Marion Kerr (MUP, 1988), Gender divisions and social change (Harvester Wheatsheaf, 1993), Feminism, the state and social policy (Macmillan, 2000), Gender in Modern Britain (Oxford University Press, 2002) and two co-edited books, Practising Feminism (Routledge, 1996) and Gender, ethnicity and political ideologies (Routledge, 1988).

A new book, Families in Transition (Policy Press, 2008), co-authored with Charlotte Davies and Chris Harris of Swansea University has just been published.

She is currently Director of the Centre for the Study of Women and Gender and Director of MA programmes.

She is interested in supervising research students in any area which is linked to her own research.
