Hilary Pilkington joined the department in summer 2005 from the University of Birmingham where she was Director of the Centre for Russian and East European Studies.

She co-teaches (with Phil Mizen) a third year module ‘Youth and Society’ and (with Margaret Archer and Rachel Cohen) the first year core module ‘Sociological Imagination and Investigation’.

Her research focuses on the study of Russian society especially youth cultural practice, drug use, migration and displacement, ethnic and national identity including Muslim identity and the rise of xenophobic sentiments. The findings of this research have been published in a number of monographs and edited books as well as journals such as European Journal of Cultural Studies and Europaea. She works actively with NGO and government bodies to bring the findings of her research into the public domain and to the attention of policy-makers.
