Empty WBS-Applications

When logging into a WBS computer running Windows XP you should see WBS-Applications start automatically, with icons for all the applications to which you have access. Sometimes however this windows be blank, with no applications listed as below.

What to do about this depends on how often it happens and how disruptive it is to you. Three options are listed below. The first is the least disruptive to you but is only a workaround. It may be appropriate if this happens very infrequently. The next requires 5-10 minute of your time but may resolve the problem permanently. The third option is the most disruptive and time consuming.

Option 1: Workaround

  • Click Start > All Programs > Zenworks for Desktops 4. Select the Application Window. This will re-run the process to populate the WBS-Application window. As when logging in, this takes about 1 minute. Usually it is a quick and reliable way to resolve the problem for this session

Option 2: Possible permanent fix

  • Start My Computer and navigate to L:\nalcache

  • Run the application delnalcache.exe (if you can't see the last 3 letters of the application's name ensure you run the application with the 'A' icon)
  • This takes about 1 minute. Once it is complete (the same 'A' icon should disappear from the notification area near the clock in the bottom right of your screen) perform the steps in Option 1 to have WBS-Applications refresh itself. Thereafter the problem should hopefully have been resolved.

Option 3: Re-image your computer

  • This option involves backing up all your work and wiping the computer clean
  • A new copy of Windows and the core applications is then installed and any data you have copied back
  • In total this process takes about 3 hours for ISSU. Additional to this you will need to spend time re-installing any additional software and making any personalisation changes you require. Sometimes however it is the best way forward as you get a nice, clean machine that may be quicker and more reliable. If you think this is the best way forward please let us know by following the instructions here.
