John Benington

John is Emeritus Professor at Warwick University, where for over 20 years he led Warwick Business School’s research, development and teaching work in the fields of public policy and management, including the setting up of the Institute of Governance and Public Management, the Local Government Research Centre, the Warwick MPA and the Masters and Diploma Programmes in Public Leadership and Management. John also has 20 years prior experience of senior management in the public and voluntary sectors.

He has been an adviser to the Governments of the UK, South Africa, Sierra Leone, and Southern Sudan. He is a non executive member of the Board of the UK’s National School of Government (formerly the Civil Service College), and a member of the Sunningdale Institute which forms part of the National School. He is national chair of the UK Local Authorities and Research Councils Initiative (LARCI), and is on the editorial boards of the journal Leadership, and of the International Journal of Public Administration.

His research and publications are on community and economic development, networked governance, public value and civic leadership. John’s most recent publications include a book on Leadership for Healthcare with Jean Hartley (Policy Press) and an edited book with Harvard’s Mark Moore, on Public Value: Theory and Practice, (Palgrave).
