Phase I

[c]
In Phase I, the Knowledge and Innovation Network at Warwick Business School collaborated with some of the world’s leading organisations to benchmark their networks and communities of practice against other organisation and sectors.

In what we believe to be the biggest network benchmarking study ever undertaken, KIN researchers worked with
  • 1,286 respondents from 52 networks
  • across 10 global organisations in key knowledge intensive sectors including
    • Oil and Gas
    • Pharmaceuticals
    • Technology
    • Consulting & Professional Services
    • Aerospace
The results of Phase 1 revealed some key factors that appear to be strong predictors of high performing communities and networks:

     • Provide significant funding for face-to-face events
     • Ensure community activities address business issues
     • Provide CoP leader training
     • Ensure high levels of sponsor expectation
     • Ensure CoP leaders are given sufficient time for their role
     • Engage members in developing good practice
     • Improve the usefulness of tools provided
     • Ensure there are clearly stated goals
     • Promote CoPs ability to help employee’s solve daily work challenges

The results of the Phase I benchmarking excercise are published in a series of reports entitled
'Communities of Practice (CoP) Benchmarking Report: Using CoPs to improve Individual and organisational performance':
