My Research Philosophy

From Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities (1996):

Marco Polo describes a bridge, stone by stone.

"But which is the stone that supports the bridge?" Kublai Khan asks.

"The bridge is not supported by one stone or another," Marco answers, "but by the line of the arch that they form."

Kublai Khan remains silent, reflecting. Then he adds: "Why do you speak to me of the stones? It is only the arch that matters to me."

Polo answers: "Without stones there is no arch."

In organization studies, we often pay more attention to “the arch”– that led to social determinism - otherwise more to “stones” that influence our actions in everyday life – that led to technological determinism. But “to build a bridge” means to look at the equilibrium between “the arch” and “stones”. Social and material (artefacts and technologies) are to an organization as “arch” and “stones” are to a bridge.
