Doctorate in Education (Ed D)

The Ed.D provides post graduate students with the opportunity to acquire a doctoral qualification by combining taught study in particular areas of interest with an extended piece of research.

It is open to all suitably qualified professionals who work in education or child related services but is specifically designed to be of interest to full or part-time professionals who would prefer a more gradual path to a doctorate than the Ph.D provides.

The EdD is studied 5 years part time or 3 years full time.

Route to Ed.D The normal route (p/t) would be as follows:

First year: - In the first year, you will take three modules at masters level. These can be selected from all suitable modules within the Masters programme offered by the Institute of Education. Each module will be assessed by an assignment of 5,000 words.  A mark of 60 or above (level B) must be achieved.

Second year: In the second year, you will follow courses in research methodology, with assessment tailored to your specific requirements. The research methods courses will help you finalise and justify a research question; select an appropriate research methodology and thoroughly prepare for your fieldwork; and consider and take account of all relevant ethical issues. Once again the assessment for this year will consist of three assignments at 5,000 words each. A mark of 60 or above (level B) must be achieved.

You will then have up to three years to carry out and complete your research and write your thesis of 50,000 words. During this time you will receive on-line guidance from a research mentor and both on-line and face to face support from a specialist supervisor.

The Ed.D will be of particular interest to all professionals who already hold a Masters qualification. This will allow you to apply for APL which could count for up to 20,000 words of the total 80,000 and could mean that you need not take any of the first year modules.
