Scholarships and Funding Opportunities

There are some scholarship and funding opportunities available for research students, however all of these are extremely competitive. They require an excellent academic record and ongoing involvement in research - sometimes requiring publications in a relevant journal. We recommend that you ask the Research Team for advice when applying for any funding. We can offer good advice and help you make the most of your application. Summary of Funding and Eligibility

 ESRC Scholarship Competition opens 1st August 2011 - 30th April 2012 - WIE have a quota award available to Home* applicants please: Apply for doctoral study at WIE, contact Louisa Hopkins to notify your interest, submit a 1000 word research proposal to the department. You are also required to provide WIE with proof of eligibility as a British *or European citizen resident in UK for more than 3 years. Follow this link Applying for study. Students who have already applied for scholarship funding through the main route, now closed, will automatically be considered for ESRC funding and should not apply again. Please see our Doctoral Training Centre to check your eligibility and the resources that are available.

There are also Collaborative awards available from the ESRC through the Doctoral Training Centre (DTC). A non-education collaborative partner will be required to fund half of the costs.

International Office Scholarships competition (MA and MA by Research) is now open with deadline of March 2nd 2012. Please complete your study application by March 2nd and notify Louisa Hopkins that you wish to be considered for one of these. Further details

Chancellor's Scholarship (Formerly known as WPRS) Closed - opens 1st August 2012 - 31st January 2013 Most scholarships are applied for using the combined online doctoral study and scholarship application form. When you reach the 'Finance' section of your online application for study, if you select 'scholarship' or 'studentship' for your method of funding, you will then be asked if you wish to apply for ESRC, Chancellor's or Chancleeor's International, AHRC Scholarship etc. You will then be able to complete an online application for these. WIE advise you to contact the Research Office and your prospective superivsor before submitting your online application for a scholarship, since once you have submitted it will not be possible to change it (although it is possible to add to it).

 AHRC Scholarship competition Closed - opens 1st August 2012- 31st January 2013 please contact Louisa Hopkins to notify your interest. You will need to complete the 'scholarship' pages in the finance section of the form when applying for doctoral study (If you have not already done so in relation to previous scholarships. To be considered for AHRC your proposal will need to fit with a current AHRC 'theme' and you will need to notify us so we can ensure it is considered under this AHRC theme. Please be aware that you are required to upload a proposal at the same time - please see our guidleines

WIE Departmental Scholarship opens in April 2012 - WIE is awarding a scholarship for an amount in line with the UK Funding Councils, around £17,000 per annum for 3 years. The award is for PhD study and is renewable for the second and third years of study. This award is open to Home/EU and International students. You must hold an offer for doctoral study. WCPRS (Warwick Collaborative Postgraduate Research Scholarship) It is now likely that there will be a small number of new WCPRS awards available for take-up in the 2011-12 academic year. This is due to a re-adjustment of the budget. Up to 15 WCPRS awards will be available for take-up in 2012-13. This is due to an internal budget increase of 5 awards and a contribution from the HEIF fund equating to 10 awards.

BELMAS - Opens in March 2012 A new bursary opportunity has become available to research students who have completed their upgrade and are carrying our their project in the area of Education Policy, Governance, Leadership or Management. There are a limited number of bursaries from BELMAS available for the next academic year 2012-2013 of up to £2,000. These are for students studying for a PhD or for an EdD.

General Tips when applying for any scholarship or funding:

  • Remember that the selectors may not be education specialists so you will need to bear this in mind when describing your research proposal.

  • Emphasise your project's contribution to the field

  • If you have done a masters dissertation on the same project area, emphasise this

  • Make sure you include your grades on your first degree and Master's

  • Detail any scholarships you have held, any prizes you have won or any recognition you have received

  • Reference anything relevant that you have published

  • Explain WHY you wish to carry out this particular research

  • Ask advice from the Research Office if you are unsure
