The MA in Educational Leadership & Management offers a unique programme that is customised to the varying needs of students wishing to pursue leadership roles at different levels within educational organisations. Its special feature is the client-oriented focus that allows for specialised delivery based on contextual needs both across England and internationally. Its multi-pronged route enables the development of scholarly career route as well as research informed professional practice.
Course Aims and Benefits
At the end of the course we anticipate that the students will have developed:
- Reflective and critical capabilities providing them with a sound basis for their next career move.
- The necessary knowledge and skills to respond to a variety of educational leadership challenges within their organisations.
Course Specific Modules
You will take two core modules and two optional ones (30 CATs each) and a final project or dissertation (60 CATs).
Leading Educational Change and Improvement (core)
This module explores the relationship between leadership and the improvement of teaching and learning outcomes. The module includes an international review of educational leadership and school improvement research. Investigation draws strongly on the most recent development in research, policy theory and practice.
Researching Educational Leadership and Management (or another suitable research methods module)
This module explores the main approaches to researching in educational institutions, with a specific focus on methods appropriate for those leading and managing schools and colleges, or are aspiring to do so. The module aims to equip educational professionals with the knowledge and skills required to undertake a dissertation on educational leadership practice.
Policy, Strategy and Resources (optional within the field)
This module addresses themes in educational leadership and management and aims to develop students' confidence and effectiveness and managing resources and understanding policy. The module gives particular focus to the development and implementation of policy and has links with other modules on the course.
Mentoring and Coaching
This module explores the notions of mentoring and coaching and what it means in different organisations, settings and to those from different professional backgrounds. The module will enhance students’ understanding of their practice in relation to their mentoring and coaching. It will also critically engage students with the current mentoring and coaching theories and practice across professional boundaries.
Final Project/Dissertation
This is an individual research project into an area of leadership that each student is particularly interested in. Students will receive individual support from their academic supervisors.
Course Delivery and Learning Styles
- All taught modules are delivered during the week for full time students and on Saturdays for part-time students only during terms 1 and 2 of each academic year.
- The course employs a variety of teaching approaches customised to students' learning needs.
- Students are expected to carry out some work away from the University. Attendance is compulsory for all taught courses.
Career Development
This course is intended to enable participants to develop and improve their abilities as educational leaders. It will also enhance the reflective and critical capabilities of students, providing a sound basis for their next career move. Recent graduates of the course include classroom leadership innovators, middle level leaders, senior managers, local authority advisors and independent consultants and international educators who now hold a range of senior positions.
Admissions
Standard entry requirements apply. In addition, those with professional experience relevant to graduate study in educational leadership are also welcomed. There is exemption from specific modules available for those holding NPQH qualification and similar opportunities for recognising other national leadership programmes such as LPSH and Leading from the Middle.
